Technical Writing!!!...What exactly is Technical Writing and why is it so slept on?

"A technical writer is someone who transforms complex and technically difficult written material into clear and concise documentation that will be read by target audiences. They gather and develop technical information in order to create maintenance and operating instructions, technical and instructional manuals, journal articles, and other documentation for manufacturers, designers, and clients"

What are the various different types of Technical Writers?

  • Cybersecurity Tech Writers
  • Cloud Tech Writers
  • Marketing Tech Writers
  • UI/UX Tech Writers
  • Scientific Writers
  • Medical Technical Writers
  • API Tech Writers and moreeeee

What do technical writers make?

The average salary range for general technical writers is between $70k to $100k... howeverrr

The super high earners in technical writing are the specialized tech writers as most of any other tech space for example ;)

This is the salary that popped up in a LinkedIn dm for one of my students for a Cybersecurity Cloud Technical writer position This calculated in a year is about a $170k to $180k salary... umm where do they do that at??

How can you become a technical writer?

  1. Take a course (whether self-paced or instructor led)
  2. Create a digital portfolio to display your different bodies of technical documentation so hiring managers can see what you can do (Have at least 10 bodies of work)
  3. Re writer your resume that highlights on your documentation skills.
  4. Sprinkle some magic on your LinkedIn
  5. Apply to jobs

I don't know about you, but I am trying to be #Boredbutpaid meaning let me come and go as I please, you need me but you're not checking for me while still getting paid bank.
